TOWN OF SCHERERVILLE NOW HIRING ACCOUNTING/UTILITY TECHNICIAN
GENERAL PURPOSE
- To perform and supervise routine clerical, accounting, and administrative work in utility receipts, other accounts receivable, and general administration
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
- Works under the general supervision of the Clerk Treasurer.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists in maintaining a cash balance and balancing cash on hand against receipts
- Prepares periodic utility, financial, statistical, or operational reports as assigned
- Receives and processes utility payments, new residents, non-utility payments, and maintains appropriate & accurate records
- Receives telephone calls and in-office resident visits concerning utility bills or services, handles questions regarding miscellaneous concerns, and responds to citizen complaints
- Maintains a daily cash balance, balances cash on hand against receipts, prepares and balances bank deposits, reviews deposits, and deposits monies into bank
- Provides clerical support to the Chief Deputy & Clerk-Treasurer as needed
- Pursues collection of delinquent utility account, including facilitating disconnection of services
- Maintains Clerk-Treasurer’s Office building security with unlocking at the start of business & locking at close of business
- Maintains Clerk-Treasurer’s Office supply inventory as needed
- Registers individuals for various Parks & Recreation Department programs & activities
- Balances the Parks & Recreation Department drawer on a daily basis to ensure accuracy and correct entering of all records into the appropriate bank. Prepares a separate bank deposit for the previous day’s Parks & Recreation Department cash & check receipts
- Coordinates with other Town departments for disposal of expired public records in accordance with state statutes and regulations
- Sort & distribute U.S. Mail in the Clerk-Treasurer’s Office to other Town departments
- Coordinate with other Town departments on day-to-day functions of the Town
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be bondable.
- Graduation from high school with specialized course work in general office practices such as typing, accounting, and data processing preferred.
- Working knowledge of computers and electronic data, working knowledge of modern knowledge practices and procedures, working knowledge of governmental accounting principles and practices, and working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to perform mathematical computations accurately and quickly, ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, ability to establish successful working relationships, ability to work under pressure even with frequent interruptions.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
In accordance with Indiana Code 5-11-1-27 (g), the Town of Schererville passed Resolution 2016-13 establishing a system of Internal Controls to promote government accountability and transparency. Employees are required to meet the minimum State Board of Accounts training requirements for Internal Controls and comply with the Five Components of Internal Controls: 1. Control Environment; 2. Risk Assessment; 3. Control Activities; 4. Information and Communications; and 5. Monitoring Activities via documented procedures for critical tasks, which are reviewed and revised periodically to maintain accuracy.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
- Equipment knowledge needed for this position: personal computer, telephone, 10-key calculator, fax and copy machine, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, Key-Utility, and Key-Fund. Remote desktop, Gmail account and financial software.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The work environment is moderately quiet and indoors.
