Road Work

The following is a list of current major roadwork or road closures in Schererville. Information is posted as it is provided to us. Please check with Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) to check the status of US Highway 30 and US Highway 41.

Road Closure: US 231 West of Crown Point

LAKE COUNTY, Ind. - Indiana Department of Transportation contractor Rieth Riley Construction will close U.S. 231 between Bell Street and Tenbrook Drive on or after Wednesday, June 12 through mid-August for two consecutive projects. 

U.S. 231 will first be closed between Hendricks Place and Tenbrook Drive for a pipe lining project. After the first project is complete, the closure of U.S. 231 will be between Bell Street and Fathke Road for a small structure replacement project.

Motorists should seek alternate routes. The official detour will follow U.S. 41, U.S. 30 and State Road 55.

U.S. 231 has been closed between Hendricks Place and Chase Drive for an unrelated permit project for the City of Crown Point. These INDOT projects were not able to be conducted at the same time due to the location and nature of the permitted utility work.

Road Closure: 83rd LN Between Blaine PL and Webster CT (Schererville Area)

THE LAKE COUNTY HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT IS NOTIFYING ALL PUBLIC AGENCIES AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC THAT 83rd LN WILL BE CLOSED FOR DRAINAGE IMPROVEMENTS, BETWEEN BLAINE PL AND WEBSTER CT STARTING MONDAY, JUNE 3RD AT 6:00 AM THRU FRIDAY, AUGUST 2ND AT 5:00 PM, WEATHER PERMITTING
DETOUR ROUTES:

Eastbound: at Blaine Pl and 83rd Ln, take Blaine Pl south to 84th Pl, take 84th Pl east to Morse Pl, take Morse Pl north to 83rd Ln
Westbound: at Webster Ct and 83rd Ln, take 83rd Ln east to Morse Pl, take Morse Pl south to 84th Pl, take 84th Pl west to Blaine Pl, take Blaine Pl north to 83rd Ln

During the periods of construction, you may encounter some minor inconveniences. However, every effort will be made to minimize these inconveniences. Detour signs will be set up to help you navigate around the project. We ask that you slow down and leave space between you and other vehicles and drive distraction-free. And always use caution and consider worker safety when traveling through a work zone.

Notice of Nipsco Utility Work

Where: Intersection of 91st at Burr to intersection of 101st at Blaine in St John
When: Utility work will be starting on April 29, 2024
Why: Electrical system modernization

Beginning on April 29, 2024, NIPSCO will start replacing and upgrading the existing electrical wires and utility poles in Schererville between 91st @ Burr St. and 101st @ Blaine in St John. The upgrade includes replacing and upgrading 8 utility poles and 2 miles of distribution line. This system modernization project will provide increased reliability of the Nipsco electrical grid for years to come.
NIPSCO will be performing this work and construction will take place Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. All construction schedules are dependent on weather.

Residents should exercise caution when driving around work zones and should follow the direction of traffic signs and on-site crews. Temporary road/lane closures and restrictions may occur with this project. Signs will be posted ahead of time and detour routes will be in place.

Road Work & Lane Closures: U.S. 30 to have lane closures between state line and U.S. 41

LAKE COUNTY, Ind. - Indiana Department of Transportation contractor Superior Construction Co Inc will have lane closures on U.S. 30 between the Illinois State Line and U.S. 41 beginning on or after Monday, April 15.

This is a concrete restoration project, with full depth patching and joint repairs. There will also be a preventative maintenance bridge deck overlay done on the Plum Creek bridge between Hart St and Moeller St.

Work will be ongoing through mid-May, with alternating lane closures and changing traffic patterns. During phase one, the left passing lane and left turn lanes will be closed in both directions. 

INDOT encourages drivers to allow extra time when driving through this area and follow traffic directions carefully. Motorists should slow down, exercise caution and drive distraction-free through all work zones.

Update on 5/29/24:

Starting on June 10, 2024, bridge deck overlay will begin.

US 30 over Hart Ditch Bridge: There will be only one lane in each direction. The eastbound (EB) lane on US 30 will reduce to one lane (right lane) at Lake St., and the westbound (WB) lane will reduce to one lane (right lane) just west of Clark Rd. in Dyer, Indiana, and transition into the Left Lane closures on EB and WB US-30 between Lake Street and Keilman St.

A truck route for the 11-foot width limit will be as follows:
• Eastbound (EB) US 30 to Northbound (NB) 394 to Eastbound (EB) 80/94 to Southbound (SB) US 41 to Eastbound (EB) US 30.
• Westbound (WB) US 30 to Northbound (NB) US 41 to Westbound (WB) 80/94 to Southbound (SB) 394 to Westbound (WB) US 30.

Ramp & Lane Closures: I-94 off Indianapolis BLVD and Kennedy AVE., Starting 4/15/24

Indiana Department of Transportation contractor Dunnet Bay Construction Company will begin bridge deck overlay preventative maintenance projects on I-94 near U.S. 41/Indianapolis Blvd and Kennedy Ave on or after Monday, April 15.

Work will begin at the I-94 bridges over U.S. 41/Indianapolis Blvd and over Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad just west of Kennedy Ave. There will also be future work at the eastbound I-94 to northbound State Road 912/Cline Ave ramp bridge. This work will be conducted in phases and will be ongoing through late August.  

During phase one, the right lane of I-94 eastbound will be closed between U.S. 41/Calumet Ave and Kennedy Ave. Traffic will be shifted to the left to maintain four travel lanes. Phase one will be in place through approximately mid-May.

The following ramps will be closed on or after Monday, April 15 through late June:
• Eastbound I-94 to northbound Indianapolis Blvd
• Northbound and southbound U.S. 41/Indianapolis Blvd to eastbound I-94
• Eastbound I-94 to northbound and southbound Kennedy Ave
• Northbound and southbound Kennedy Ave to westbound I-94

Motorists should be prepared for changing traffic patterns and delays during peak times. INDOT encourages drivers to allow extra time when driving through this area and follow traffic directions carefully.
