Statement from Schererville Police Chief Pete Sormaz On COVID-19 3/23/2020

March 23, 2020 04:30 PM

During the current COVID-19 emergency, Schererville Police Department is open, but with essential staff presence in the police department building.  Our essential staff members are records clerks, dispatchers and police officers.  We are asking the public to call first before arriving or entering the police department. Citizens can call 219-322-5000 with non-emergency and 911 for all emergency concerns.  Dispatchers will be asking screening questions to identify COVID-19 concerns before sending officers to meet with citizens.

Schererville police officers will work to remain visible on patrols in order to deter crime.  Schererville police officers are out in full strength.  Some adjustments have been made to daily procedures as it relates to minor offenses.  Obviously, officers are still responding to any situation involving any citizen’s personal safety etc.  Felony arrests along with violent crimes are still being addressed with the same vigilance.

Officers are able to take most types of reports over the phone and provide case numbers to citizens.  Obviously, everyone being aware of personal space is also being emphasized to officers and public.

The Schererville Police Department will continue to protect our community
